When using the foam tips, they need to be compressed to as small as possible before being inserted into the ears.  This will allow the foam to expand in the ear canal for maximum noise isolation. Also, this prolongs the life of the foam tips.  If you do not compress them before putting them into the ears, they will rip and tear faster, as you are just shoving the foam into the ears, which slowly tears the foam each time, making them not last as long.
